Introduction Wine Blog
Hi! My name is Penelope Parker and I am in my last semester at OU. I am a Biochemistry major and plan to go to medical school. I love wine and have quite a bit of experience trying different types of wines. While I was growing up, my family would drink wine with dinner often so I tried wines that way. I have continued to drink wine with dinner at least once a week because I like trying to pair wines with my food and trying new wines. I have also visited a winery in Chile named Santa Marta, which taught me a lot more about how wine is created. Aside from trying wines at dinner and visiting Santa Marta winery, I do not have much other experience with wine.
So far, I am not sure what type of wines I like. I had thought moscato was the only type of wine that I liked until this past semester. I tried a chardonnay- which I had thought previously that was one of my least favorite types of wine- with my grandparents and really enjoyed it. Also, in Chile I tried multiple Sauvignon Blanc's and enjoyed the majority of the ones I tried there. As for red wines, I love Syrah. I do not think I have ever tried a Syrah I dislike. I also like cabernet sauvignon and red blends. Merlot and Malbec wines I sometimes like, but other times I hate them. The only type of wine I have disliked the majority of the time is Carmenere. From my experience, I think I can like any type of wine depending on the bottle. I just have not been able to figure out how to know which bottles of each type of wine that I would like, but am excited to start learning and improving.
Although wine is one of my favorite types of alcohol and I drink it often, I feel like I am not very knowledgable about it yet. When certain words are used to describe wine (i.e. crisp) I have no idea what that means and have not been able to figure out the differences in tastes yet. Throughout this course, I hope I am able to learn and understand wine vocabulary better so that I am able to tell what types of wine I like solely from the description and/or smells. I am really jealous because most people in my family- especially my mom- can look at a wine menu and know exactly what is going to taste best with their meals based off the type of wine and region it is from, which is the main thing I would like to learn about in this course.
